Bio

John Emery Coleman is a Novelist focusing on epic fantasy, sword & sorcery, neo-noir, LGBTQIA+ romance, and horror stories. They have a firm belief in telling the true stories of the world, be they wonderful, uncomfortable, strange, or stranger.

Growing up in the pastoral landscapes of the Midwest United States left Coleman a lot of time to read, preferring the pulp fantasy stories of authors like Fritz Lieber, Michael Moorcock, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Robert E. Howard. With a childhood like that it’s no wonder that they ended up spending their teenage years fencing, hunting, playing Dungeons & Dragons, and writing short stories until the early hours of the morning.

Starting their career as a shock jock and journalist for their first university, UW Parkside, John Emery branched out into local art critique and game design due to their staying interest in roleplaying games and the local history around Kenosha. Once they moved on from the UW system, they spent time apprenticing under a veteran game designer from the old TSR staff in order to learn in greater detail how interactive storytelling can affect an audience. This time editing showed Coleman that there wasn’t money in tabletop publishing, but there was value in the stories and worlds they had been writing since childhood.

Nowadays, Coleman spends their time sharing their love of film and storytelling right in their old stomping grounds, the good old Midwest. Keeping their passions for nature and physicality alive by travelling to as many classic film locations they can, they started to publish Midwest Wide Angle right here on the site you’re reading! John Emery has started to branch out to other faces of the entertainment industry, with interests in acting, screenwriting, and other aspects of film production, hoping to improve the medium in any small way they can.
